Growing up in the upper peninsula of Michigan, Rose Heikkinen’s art is representational of her love of nature and places she has visited.

Heikkinen, who currently lives in nature-centric central Maine, has been a visual artist since the mid-80s.

Her first 2 decades showcased her significant oil painting creations. In mid-2007 she engaged herself in mixed media art form.

Enter, her body of work “Rose Colored Glasses”, originally titled “Experimental.”

In this series, Rose’s Heikkinen presents a combination of glass etchings and collage; and uses glazed tints of oil paint over collage and graphite drawings.

This is just one example of the diversity of materials and techniques in her substantive works.

In her “Love Project,” series she notes, “I cut out shapes from old musical notations and literary books then glue them around various images I choose to draw. The antique yellows and embers in this work correspond to my affinity for antiques. The craftsmanship and faded colors of antiques indicate a different time and style from our modern-day world.”

Rose Heikkinen received her Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Center of Creative Studies and her Master of Fine Arts from Wayne State University in Detroit. Heikkinen also had an early career as an art teacher in public and private schools.
